Flea & Tick Control Services from Killem

Fleas and Ticks can get on your clothing and these linen blood-sucking parasites cause itchy bites and are usually found on household pets.

Ticks may be found in areas such as grasslands, forests, and human homes. Once hatched all stages of a tick’s life cycle feed on blood.

Fleas are insects and are wingless and not capable of flight. However, they have long legs and have extensive jumping skills meaning they can move through dense fur or hair. Fleas are common throughout the world, with numerous species residing primarily in households.

Here’s what you can do about Flea & Tick problems:

How to get rid of Flea problems

Killing fleas at the source

Most flea infestations stem from pets so start combing your pet with a flea comb, focusing on the neck and tail of your pet in particular.

Drop any fleas you comb off into hot soapy water to kill them. Also be sure to speak with your veterinarian about flea control services for your pet.

Destroy Pet Bedding

For heavy flea infestations, it is advised to discard all pet bedding. For milder flea infestations washing the bedding thoroughly in hot, soapy water should be done to kill the fleas and destroy the eggs and larvae.

Get rid of fleas in the carpet

Use a vacuum to thoroughly vacuum the house. Make sure you pay particular attention to areas of carpet where your pets spend a lot of time.

As well as killing the fleas, vacuuming will remove flea eggs and larvae. It will also help get rid of dried blood and faeces that fleas produce, which will remove the food sources for any developing fleas.

How can we get rid of Tick problems for you

Treatment required for ticks is not the same as for fleas therefore you suspect a tick infestation we recommend using a local pest management professional.

A Killem Pest removal technician will take the following steps to remove ticks:

Inspection & Identification

We will provide an inspection of the property both inside and outside since ticks can be brought inside on clothing and by pets. The inspection will include identification of the species of ticks.

Informing You

We will provide information on tick habits, behaviours, habitats and the life cycle. We will also advise how to recognise ticks and how to prevent tick exposure.

We will also provide recommendations to contact your medical professional or veterinarian for advice on using tick repellent and treatment products on your pet if required.

Tick Habitat Modifications

We may recommend how to modify tick habitat areas in shaded areas because exposing an area to sunlight will reduce moisture and decrease tick breeding further in their habitat, helping to eradicate them.

Infestation Signs

  • Your cat or dog is constantly scratching themselves on their neck, thighs and around the tail.
  • You can see reddy-brown fleas (usually about 2mm long) crawling on your pet’s coat.
  • You find fine black droppings also known as “flea dirt” on your pet’s skin.
  • Flea dirt is evident on your pets bedding, in your carpets and on rugs.

Prevention Tips

  • Repair any crevices or gaps and cutting grass short outside may help stop infestations.
  • Dispose of all empty bird and rodent nesting materials you may find, as ticks will readily infest these items.
  • Ensure that carpets and other fabric on the floor are regularly cleaned as flea eggs can be laid on them.
  • Use a vacuum with strong suction to clean them or soak carpets in hot water to kill fleas and their eggs.
  • Use anti-flea products to ensure that pets are free from fleas.
